Jason Chaffetz Announces He Will Leave Congress Early, Won't Finish Out Term

Chaffetz is head of a committee that is the House's investigatory arm into the Executive Branch.

Chaffetz has been active in the House's probe into links between the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump and the Russians.

On Wednesday, Chaffetz announced that he planned to invite former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey to testify next week - just as a soon as he could get in touch with him.

The next chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee will have the task of holding the executive branch accountable at a time of internal upheaval within the White House.

On Thursday, Chaffetz announced he was leaving Congress, effective June 30, a move the Utah Republican said he'd make sometime during this term.

With several investigations still ongoing, Chaffetz said he was not anxious about other Republican members of the committee continuing his work.

"Serving you in the U.S. House of Representatives for almost nine years has been a rare honor and privilege", he said in the statement.

But President Trump complicated Chaffetz's life. "I told voters I did not believe that Congress should be a lifetime career", Chaffetz wrote.

With his departure a little more than a month off, Chaffetz won't be around to follow those investigative paths.

The coveted House Oversight gavel is due to change hands, as chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) steps down from Congress to become a cable TV commentator.

None of the Republicans running for office should expect an endorsement from Chaffetz until a nominee has been selected, he said. The internal jockeying among House Republicans to succeed Chaffetz in that high-profile role kicked off Thursday, with at least three Oversight Committee members phoning members of the House Republican Steering Committee, which will select his successor.

Before his time in office, he worked in communications for more than a decade and served as campaign manager for former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. "And there are a lot of good, quality people who can do this job".

He is planned to speak with reporters at his home south of Salt Lake City later Thursday afternoon.

Chaffetz's announcement came a day after he tweeted that he had invited ex-FBI Director James Comey to testify next week at a hearing of the oversight committee he leads.
