James Comey Reportedly Willing to Testify, But Wants to Do So Publicly

Tuesday night, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that the decision to can Comey came from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Pressed by Pirro on whether he asked Comey for his loyalty, Trump responded: "No, I didn't, but I don't think it would be a bad question to ask".

Spicer also denied that Trump was trying to warn Comey to stay silent about the circumstances surrounding his firing, The Hill reports.

"This was the chief investigator for the FBI, overseeing a investigation into the president's campaign, and if Jeff Sessions was honest in recusing himself, he wouldn't have sent a letter to the President recommending Director Comey's firing", Swalwell concluded.

On Friday, NBC News reporter Ken Dilanian‏ tweeted that a source close to Comey told him that "He hopes there are tapes".

President Donald Trump has said that it is a "good idea" to abolish daily White House briefing, a viewpoint which has been opposed by the White House Correspondents' Association. In July, Trump accused Comey of going too easy on Hillary Clinton when the Federal Bureau of Investigation director announced the agency would not file charges against her for using a home-brew server for her classified communications as secretary of state. He promised he would tolerate no interference from the White House and would not provide the administration with updates on its progress.

The issue is not Trump's legal authority to dismiss Comey, which he possesses with or without cause.

Trump, in an interview Thursday with NBC News, had this version: "I said, 'If it's possible, would you let me know, am I under investigation?' He said you are not under investigation".

Sen. Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the intelligence panel, said Friday that he expressed at his meeting with Rosenstein and Boente his preference that Rosenstein name a special prosecutor.

Furious with the news coverage of the White House's shifting explanations on Comey's sacking, Trump suggested the media was wrong to expect his spokespeople to be 100 percent accurate.

Even before Trump's provocative tweets, the White House was scrambling to clarify why Comey was sacked.

Trump denied that account in a Fox News interview on Friday.

March 8, 2017: During a cybersecurity conference at Boston College, Comey says he plans to serve his entire 10-year term, quipping, "You're stuck with me for another 6½ years".

The White House initially cited a Justice Department memo criticizing Comey's handling of last year's investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails as the impetus.

The FBI probe and parallel congressional investigations have hung over Trump's presidency since he took office in January and threaten to overwhelm his policy priorities. Comey declined to make that promise but told the president he could count on his honesty, the paper said. On Thursday Trump said he would have fired Comey regardless of any such recommendations.

That's far different from the White House's initial account in the hours after Comey's firing.

"You never rule anything out", he said, according to Politico.

Pearson and Lemire reported from NY.
