Instagram 'ranked worst for young people's mental health'

Instagram was rated the worst based on these issues.

The survey asked them to score how each of the social media platforms they use impacts upon 14 health and wellbeing-related issues which were identified by experts as the most significant such as anxiety, loneliness and depression.

The RSPH report warns that "social media may be fuelling a mental health crisis" in young people, reports the BBC.

Whilst highlighting the potential pitfalls of the technology the RSPH also acknowledged that such sites could be used as a force for good, but that far more effort needed to be invested in policing to flag up problem users.

Instagram is rated as the worst social media platform when it comes to its impact on young people's mental health, a poll conducted in the United Kingdom says.

A spokesman for the Mental Health Foundation charity said: 'This is an area that needs a lot more research, social media isn't inherently bad for our mental health but depending on how we use it, it can certainly have a negative impact.

The platform, which is the most popular social media network in the world, ranked positively for emotional support and community building.

Shirley Cramer, chief executive of RSPH, said that social media must become less of a "wild west" when it comes to young people's mental health and wellbeing.

The organisations are now calling for action from both the government and digital companies to help promote the positive, whilst mitigating the negatives of social media.

"It might help improve psycho-education, increase self- awareness of mental health and act as a preventative measure".

YouTube was the only social media platform that demonstrated an overall positive impact on young people's mental health in the study.

A spokesperson from Samaritans told Independent.ie that work needs to be done to make social media safer for young people.

"We're not asking these platforms to ban Photoshop or filters, but rather to let people know when images have been altered so that users don't take the images on face value as real", Keracher said.

Dr Becky Inkster, honorary research fellow at the University of Cambridge, said: "Young people sometimes feel more comfortable talking about personal issues online".

Napchan continued: "That's why we work in partnership with experts to give people the tools and information they need while using the app, including how to report content, get support for a friend they are anxious about, or directly contact an expert to ask for advice on an issue they may be struggling with".

"For those struggling with mental health issues, we want them to be able to access support on Instagram when and where they need it".

Young people who spend more than two hours per day connecting on social networking sites are more likely to report poor mental health, including psychological distress, according to the report.
