Indian Doctors Conduct Country's First-Ever Uterus Transplantation

In 2013, the world's first uterus transplant was done in Sweden - where 36-year-old mother, who was born without a uterus, received a donated womb from a friend in her 60s.

The woman, who was born without a uterus, will be fitted with her mother's womb so that she can conceive normally. "Since they knew about the uterus transplant, they approached us and accepted the surgery option", PTI quoted Dr. Puntambekar as saying on Thursday.

Doctors, in fact, said no more than seven to eight such surgeries could have ever been performed in the country.Lung:Bedridden throughout 2011, Mumbai woman Jayashree Mehta was the first Mumbai resident in the country to undergo a lung transplant. It took India 11 years to perform the same surgery, which was undertaken at King Edward Memorial Hospital at Mumbai in May 1965.

The operations are meant to help women who want to conceive but can not because they were born without a uterus, suffered damage to it or had to have it removed.

With only a handful of countries doing it, a successful transplantation will showcase the microsurgical expertise of surgeons at Pune's Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute to the world.

The hospital has been preparing for womb transplants over the past few months and recipients were made to undergo ovulation stimulation through IVF.

According to Dr Puntambekar, his team had travelled to Sweden to learn the transplant procedure and practised on human cadavers in Germany and the US.

India's first womb transplant has been successfully performed by a team of doctors on Thursday. The donor is her 45-year-old mother.

Supporters of uterus transplantation argue that no major surgery comes without side-effects, but they must keep in mind that womb transplantation is not about saving lives over potential complications and irreparable health damage.

However, the operation, in which the uterus was retrieved from the donor and transplanted into the recipient around 9 a.m., stretched well beyond its projected eight-hour duration.
