India retain top spot in latest ICC Test rankings

While South Africa gained eight points after the recent update, Australia lost same to reduce to 100 points.

Virat Kohli's side enjoyed a magnificent 2016/17 season at home in which they secured series wins over New Zealand, England and Australia and claimed the one-off Test against Bangladesh. However, second-placed South Africa catapulted to 117 points, gaining seven points, thereby narrowing down the gap between them and number one ranked India.

According to the latest ranking, India topped with 123 points, South Africa is at number two with 117 points and Australia placed third with 100 points. The 2013-2014 series results were no longer included while outcome from the 2015-2016 series had 50 per cent influence in the points calculation.

India registered series wins against West Indies when they visited the Caribbean island a year ago while thumped New Zealand, England and Australia in Test series. However, the deficit has been trimmed to six points. Australia finish third on this list, followed by their traditional rivals England who grab the fourth spot.

Pakistan has been pushed down to the sixth position after deduction of four rating points from its credit following an annual update of ICC Test ranking.

Sri Lanka are seventh with 91 points (up by one), West Indies eighth with 75 (up by five), Bangladesh ninth with 69 (up by three) and Zimbabwe 10th with zero points (down by five).
