India Names 15-Member Squad for Champions Trophy

The Indian cricket team for next month's ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in United Kingdom has been named by the Board of Control for Cricket in India selectors here today.

BCCI had missed the deadline of April 25 for submitting the squad for the tournament because ICC's new financial model disappointed BCCI as it reduces BCCI's revenue from $ 570 million to $ 293 million. It reverses a much-criticised ICC decision in 2014 to relinquish more control to Australia, England and India, the world's most powerful cricketing boards. In Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, India have an experienced core, suited to get tall scores or even chase them down.

BCCI's selection committee has given its weightage to experience rather giving opportunity to fresh talent in selection Team India for upcoming Champions Trophy which is scheduled to kickstart from June 1.

India are in Group B for the competition, facing Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

"The team has been selected keeping in mind of the season post-Champions Trophy and you can't question future tours programme", he added.

Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni retained his place in the squad amid whispers that the wicketkeeper-batsman's "finisher" reputation was on the wane.

Manish Pandey: Manish Pandey aka Pandey Ji is a stylish and a world class batsman who also plays for KKR. "We respect IPL but in the longer format, we have to also consider the English conditions that we are playing in".

Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik are the stand-by players for the ICC Champions Trophy. The swashbuckling all-rounder is also in the squad for ICC Champions Trophy 2017. "We discussed Kuldeep Yadav who would have been a solid player".

Off-spinner Ashwin returned to the side after skipping the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) with a hernia and Prasad said it was more tactical than anything else. "As far as Virat kohli is concerned, he had a break after injury".
