HTC & Lenovo VR Headsets To Launch With Possibly High Cost

Google has announced at its annual I/O conference that it will produce "standalone" virtual reality (VR) headsets that do not need to be operated by an external device.

Google revealed today that Daydream (its VR platform created to accommodate the Daydream View headset) is expanding to include standalone VR headsets. For this new project, Google has teamed with HTC Vive and Lenovo to tackle one of VR adoption's largest issues.

Standalone VR headsets are not a new phenomenon, adds the newspaper, as Intel and Oculus have "previously shown off their own prototypes".

One of the key changes will be an updated interface: Google wants Daydream VR to become more of a full-featured operating system. Standalone headsets that are independent of additional components and free of wires are the next evolution of VR hardware, as they're more fit for a mass-market audience. The hardware features a new headset tracking technology called WorldSense.

An update to provide both the S8 and S8 Plus with Daydream compatibility is due in the summer. If mobile VR an tackle that problem, of making sure that people can enjoy mobile virtual reality without worrying about being disconnected from their phone, then that only helps the potential of Daydream and similar platforms.

Vive's headset is coming "later this year". There's also a pretty unexpected addition headed to Daydream View headsets: Chrome. Tango was used in the creation of WorldSense and it also backs Google's new Visual Positioning Service (VPS). They won't appear as virtual avatars like they would in some other 360 experiences like Facebook Spaces, but you'll be able to talk to your friends and share videos with them.

According to Bavor, the unnamed Daydream headset has been developed in partnership with Qualcomm and is potentially based on the company's previously announced Snapdragon-powered design. It works initially with a handful of partner museums and the US DIY store Lowe's.
