French president Macron set to meet EU leader Tusk

France hit in 2015 a record high of €16.9 billion (U.S. $18.8 billion) in foreign arms sales, with Le Drian playing a key role in forging strong ties with political leaders.

Other women named as part of the government include Agnès Busain as minister for solidarity and health, Muriel Penicaud as minister of labour and Françoise Nyseen, a publisher, as culture minister. Nicolas Hulot, an ecologist activist, was named as ecology minister.

Of the established politicians, the party has attracted candidates from both the left and right, causing panic among traditional parties facing mass defections.

The 39-year-old president had also vowed to bring in political newcomers.

Later Wednesday, Macron will host European Council President Donald Tusk at the Elysee Palace for a private dinner. This is a first for France and its politics, that a president has appointed a prime minister from outside his camp without being forced to by a defeat in parliamentary elections.

Gerard Collomb (Je-RAR Koll-OMB), a 69-year-old Socialist, was appointed interior minister.

Collomb has spearheaded several major projects to revitalise Lyon since becoming mayor in 2001.

Alexis Kohler, Macron's new general secretary at the presidential Elysee Palace, made the announcement Wednesday.

Current Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian is expected to be the only survivor from the government of Francois Hollande, who left office last weekend after an unpopular five-year term.

Macron won one of the most unpredictable French elections in modern history marked by scandal, repeated surprises and a last-minute hacking attack on his campaign.

The visit to Berlin continued a tradition of French presidents making their first foreign trip to Germany.
