French president-elect Macron to fight 'division'

Numerous votes cast were not for Macron, rather "it was a protest vote against Marine Le Pen", he says. But it will be contesting its first ever election.

"To govern effectively, Macron needs the backing of a parliamentary majority (289 seats or more), but the chance of his movement being able to build one, from zero seats, appears slim", the analyst said.

Lauren, a young restaurant worker in Paris, told us: "I felt it was important to get out on the first day and let Macron know that even though we cast a vote for him it wasn't a happy vote".

Le Pen, who met with Putin in Moscow in March, has called for the lifting of European Union sanctions against Russian Federation, imposed over its illegal annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Unions held protests Monday in Paris' Place de la Republique against Macron, a pro-business centrist and former Socialist economy minister who they consider as a traitor for allegedly threatening worker protections with economic reforms.

Le Pen's estranged father Jean-Marie, the founder of the party, also chimed in Sunday, telling RTL radio that her euro stance was largely to blame for her defeat. However, Jean Messiha, who was in charge of drafting Le Pen's presidential platform, insisted that the euro zone was destined to collapse and that ditching the currency was the right thing to do."Softening our position on monetary sovereignty caused us to lose votes".

Le Pen, 48, defiantly claimed the mantle of France's main opposition in calling on "all patriots" to constitute a "new political force".

And he will have to do just that to secure a parliamentary majority in June for a one-year-old political movement that has never fielded candidates for election.

With almost 11 million voters, she doubled the total achieved by her father in the second round of the presidential election in 2002. The appointment of the Prime Minister will be key. Many voters backed him reluctantly, simply to keep out Le Pen's extremism.

But if another party wins a majority, the new president could be pressured to choose a prime minister from that party, a situation the French call "cohabitation".

"We have seen a major decomposition of French political life, of the old political mainstream parties and what we see now is a real new configuration which is emerging between the patriots and the new liberals", Le Pen told supporters. It will release its list of 577 candidates on Thursday. "In these circumstances, it is especially important to overcome mutual distrust and unite efforts to ensure global stability and security", he said.

On the financial front, European stock markets edged down in early trading as investors had been widely expecting Macron's victory.

The CAC 40 index of leading French shares fell 0.9 percent to 5,383.

The euro fell from six-month highs against the dollar on confirmation of Macron's widely expected victory by a margin of 66 percent to 34 percent.
