French elections: How Italy's politicians greeted Macron win

In Britain, Prime Minister Theresa May said Macron's win makes it even more important for British voters to back her Conservatives in the early election she called for June 8, to strengthen Britain's hand in its divorce proceedings with the EU.

Berlin: Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday congratulated Macron on his "spectacular" election success, pledging to help France tackle unemployment and to work together with him to promote European stability.

Centrist Emmanuel Macron was elected president of France on Sunday, defeating the far-right National Front's Marine Le Pen 66.1% to 33.9% and sending the euro to a six-month high. "We look forward to working with him to build on the strong relationship between the USA and France". "We look forward to working with the new president and continuing our close cooperation with the French government", Spicer said according to the statement.

President Hollande hailed Mr Macron's win as a sign of support for France's place in the EU.

Macron became a candidate for the presidency only in November without any party machine, with virtually no political experience or a clear agenda.

On the European Union, Macron is also an unashamed supporter, a standpoint likely to cost him votes on both the eurosceptic left and right. His victory brought a sigh of relief to the European Union, which Macron strongly supports; Le Pen had vowed to lead France out of the bloc.

"Don't boo! I will do everything to ensure they don't feel the need to vote for extremes", France's new President-elect vowed.

On Friday, hackers dumped a trove of emails from Macron's campaign on the internet in an apparent attempt to damage his candidacy just ahead of today's vote.

President Francois Hollande, under whom Mr. Macron served as economy minister for two years, congratulated him more whole-heartedly.

Addressing supporters shortly after initial projections showed she lost, Ms Le Pen said that voters would face the same choice in legislative elections next month, in which she said she meant to lead her party. He made it clear that was why he promised to be "implacable and entirely resolved" in defending their security.

But he is inexperienced - the presidential election was the first time he had stood for office - he has no political party and he faces a huge task to fashion a working parliamentary majority after legislative elections next month.

He disagrees with the idea Mr Macron won by default, and says he can now go on to win a majority in the legislative assembly.

Meanwhile, Ms Le Pen's father redoubled his criticism of his daughter late on Sunday.

Mr. Macron will formally take over from Mr. Hollande on or before May 14.
