Former US Rep. Anthony Weiner faces charges in sexting case

Former US Rep. Anthony Weiner faces charges in sexting case

He agreed not to appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison.

CNN, citing law enforcement officials, reported last September that prosecutors in the office of then-US Attorney Preet Bharara issued a subpoena for Weiner's cell phone and other records as part of an investigation into alleged "sexting" with a purportedly underage girl.

"I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse", the former Democratic congressman said.

In case you forgot, the FBI began investigating Anthony back in 2016 after a 15-year-old girl from North Carolina claimed she had exchanged lewd messages with the politician for months.

Weiner, who represented NY in Congress from 1999 to 2011, resigned after revelations that he was sending sexually explicit messages to multiple women.

Mr Weiner could be jailed for up to 10 years and is likely to be listed as a registered sex offender.

The official wasn't authorized to speak about the plea bargain because the criminal charges had yet to be filed publicly with the court and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

"Weiner's conduct was not only reprehensible, but a federal crime", Kim said.

In September, she told a news website she had exchanged lewd messages with him for several months and also accused him of asking her to undress on camera.

The investigation infamously intersected a year ago with the 2016 presidential campaign, when agents seized devices and found emails between Hillary Clinton and Huma Abedin, Weiner's estranged wife and a top Clinton adviser. Days before the November presidential election, now-former FBI director James Comey told Congress about the FBI investigation into emails between Clinton and her aides, The Times reported a year ago.

That inquiry was brief.

Mrs Clinton partly blamed her election loss to Republican Donald Trump on Mr Comey's announcement.

Weiner, who represented parts of New York City for 12 years in the House of Representatives, resigned in 2011 after an explicit photograph was posted on his Twitter account.

His failed mayoral bid was the subject of a documentary called Weiner.

He ran for New York City mayor in 2013 and was leading several polls until it was revealed he had continued his questionable behavior.
