Manning was released Wednesday from a lockup at Kansas' Fort Leavenworth. She was given a 35-year sentence of a possible maximum sentence of 90 years.

The Army said Tuesday that Manning would remain on active duty in a special, unpaid status that will legally entitle her to military medical care, along with commissary privileges. One of Manning's attorneys, David Coombs, told NBC News that it also means Manning could be vulnerable to new military punishment if she steps out of line.

"For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea", Manning said in a recent statement. They allege that her physical and mental health care was restricted and that she was not allowed to keep her "feminine" haircut.

Despite keeping her privacy, Manning did post a celebratory picture on social media about her release.

Manning, who announced that she was transgender after her sentencing, attempted suicide twice while incarcerated in a male military prison at Fort Leavenworth, where she has spent large stretches in solitary confinement.

Chelsea Manning was released on Wednesday from a Kansas military prison after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence for leaking military documents to Wikileaks.

"She has experienced trauma over the past seven years of her confinement and the trauma from those experiences won't just evaporate the day she walks out of prison", said American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Chase Strangio, who represented Manning. The film is titled "XY Chelsea" and will be directed by British filmmaker Tim Travers Hawkins and executive produced by "Citizenfour" filmmaker Laura Poitras.

While in prison Manning sought sex reassignment surgery paid for by the government. Producers say Manning granted filmmakers "unprecedented access". On Monday, Tomi Lahren, the former star of Glen Beck's The Blaze, published a video focused on "Chelsea Bradley Manning taking advantage of military benefits and hormone treatments".

Chelsea Manning, the transgender army private jailed for giving United States secrets to WikiLeaks, said Wednesday she was looking to put the past behind her as she walked free from a maximum-security prison in Kansas. Former President Barack Obama granted Manning clemency during his final days in office. She was later acquitted of the most serious charge against her, aiding the enemy. She was convicted of 17 of the 22 charges against her but acquitted of charges alleging she aided the enemy or that she meant to harm the national security interests of the country.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in November 2010 that the impact of WiKiLeaks releasing diplomatic cables (from Manning's leak) was "significantly overwrought" by others, noted NPR.

Virtually unknown at the time of her arrest, Manning today is a well-known figure around the world.
