Ex-US Rep. Anthony Weiner to plead guilty in sexting case

"Today, former Congressman Anthony Weiner admitted and pled guilty to sending sexually explicit images and directions to engage in sexual conduct to a girl he knew to be 15 years old", acting US Attorney Joon H. Kim said in a statement.

Early Friday morning, former Democratic congressman Anthony Weiner surrendered himself to FBI agents and will appear before a federal judge later this afternoon.

Weiner is estranged from Huma Abedin, a top aide to former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. According to The Times, the plea agreement could result in Weiner registering as a sex offender but avoiding prison time - the charge he's facing carries a possible sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former NY congressman and estranged husband of top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, tearfully admitted Friday to a federal judge that he sent obscene material to a 15-year-old high school student in North Carolina, the same day Abedin filed for divorce from him. The Daily Mail reported she said he sent her numerous photos, one of him in a pool and at least one bare-chested.

The FBI began investigating Weiner in September after the 15-year-old North Carolina girl told a tabloid news site that she and Weiner had exchanged lewd messages for several months.

There, he will plead guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor, multiple news outlets report. Phone messages left Friday with the North Carolina girl's father were not immediately returned. This discovery prompted then-FBI director James Comey to announce in late October that he was re-opening the investigation into Clinton's emails.

Though Mr Comey said soon afterwards that the emails contained nothing to change his view that Mrs Clinton could not be charged with a crime, the development was seen as influencing voters in the run-up to polling on 8 November.

Arlo Devlin-Brown, an attorney at Covington & Burling, said Weiner accepted "full responsibility" for his "inappropriate" actions, adding that Weiner would not further address the matter. But Clinton partly blamed her election loss to Republican Donald Trump on Comey's announcement.

Weiner, who represented parts of New York City for 12 years in the House of Representatives, resigned in 2011 after an explicit photograph was posted on his Twitter account. His failed mayoral bid was the subject of the documentary Weiner. Weiner ran for mayor of New York City in 2013 during which a similar sexting scandal unfolded.
