Disputes Arise between Netanyahu, Trump over Relocation of US Embassy

He made no reference to suggestions the USA embassy might be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Netanyahu's office quickly responded, saying in a statement issued on Monday: "Israel's position has been stated many times before to the American administration and the world".

Netanyahu hurried to remove any doubt - and preempt protest within his right-wing government - in a statement issued by his office.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem as its indivisible capital, a claim that is not recognised internationally, and the Western Wall - the holiest prayer site for Jews - is part of territory it captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

Earlier on Monday Conor Powell, a Jerusalem-based reporter for the U.S. network, tweeted: "Everyone I've spoken to in DC that has been briefed on Jerusalem embassy move says Netanyahu told Trump not to move embassy at this time".

Friedman, who has long argued for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and previously called the two-state solution a "scam", presented his credentials to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Tuesday.

But generally, it is hard to overstate the degree to which the career bureaucracy disapproves of moving the US embassy - and not just in the State Department.

He has yet to make any concrete moves toward carrying out that promise.

When President Trump visits Jerusalem's Western Wall, one of the holiest Jewish sites in the world, during his trip to Israel next week, he will be the first-ever sitting United States president to do so.

During the campaign, Trump said he would move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Israel's capital, a proposal that Palestinian leaders would complicate any chances of working out a peace deal.

At least 10,000 Israeli police will be deployed to protect Donald Trump during his visit to the Jewish state on 22-23 May.

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly wanted to accompany Trump to the Western Wall, a request the White House reportedly denied.

Tillerson added that the decision "will be informed by the parties involved in the talks".

President Obama invoked the last such waiver on December 1 past year, so Trump will either have to follow suit on or before June 1, or set in motion steps towards moving the embassy from its current Tel Aviv beachfront location.

In addition to two meetings with Netanyahu while in the Middle East, Greenblatt met with Abbas, Palestinian civil society groups and visited with Palestinian children in a West Bank Refugee camp.

He also surrounded himself with a core of advisers with strong ties to the West Bank settlement movement, including his ambassador, David Friedman.
