Dems rule out Lieberman, Keating as Federal Bureau of Investigation picks; former colleague not acceptable

Lieberman traveled to the White House on Wednesday on short notice for an interview and afterward said it was a "good meeting". Joe Lieberman to replace former FBI Director James Comey.

The president also replied "he is" when asked whether Mr Lieberman is a top candidate for the position. Russian officials have repeatedly denied charges of interfering in the USA elections, saying the allegations are absurd and represent an attempt to divert the U.S. public's attention from revealed instances corruption as well as other pressing domestic issues. Before he began working on Capitol Hill, he was the attorney general of CT from 1983-1989.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, called on Trump on Thursday to name Lieberman to the post. As FBI chief, he would be in a position to act on President Donald Trump's reported desire to jail journalists who publish leaks of classified information. "It's special", Mr Trump said later Thursday at a joint news conference with Mr Santos.

But Lieberman lost his senate seat to a primary challenger in 2006, and he ran as an independent to retain his seat. Trump may choose a new director, who must be approved by the Senate, before he leaves on a nine-day foreign trip tomorrow.

Blumenthal said the next director could be "a career prosecutor with a distinguished background - not just any prosecutor". Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to Politico. "I think there's a lot of people on both sides of the aisle that are looking for someone that doesn't come from the political realm, somebody frankly in the tradition of Mueller, who has a real history in enforcing the law - not somebody who has spent time in the partisan realm". He's also a Democrat, and while Lieberman was respected by both major parties throughout his tenure, his past affiliation may cause trouble during the confirmation process.

Opposing Lieberman's nomination would mean Democrats turning their back on their own party's 2000 vice presidential candidates-in a year when they won the popular vote.

Lieberman became an independent after CT voters defeated him in a Democratic primary, largely a result of his support of the Iraq war.

However, Lieberman is also a senior counsel at Kasowitz, Benson, Torres-a law firm specializing in commercial litigation that has represented Trump on numerous legal issues.

But he told NBC Connecticut that Trump's victory is a result of people's dissatisfaction with Washington.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Brimming with resentment, President Donald Trump fervently denied on Thursday that his campaign had collaborated with Russian Federation or that he'd tried to kill an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of the issue, contending that "even my enemies" recognize his innocence and declaring himself the most unfairly hounded president in history. Trump appears to be betting that senators will be uncomfortable grilling their former colleague too hard about his qualifications for the job.

The ACLU said Thursday it has "serious concerns" about Lieberman, who has supported expansive surveillance power for the government.

A handful of other candidates interviewed for the job have publicly bowed out.
