Deadline to register to vote in General Election 2017 just days away

"However, if you are not yet on the register, or have moved house since the referendum vote past year, make sure you register before Monday's deadline to allow you to have your say in the election on 8 June".

There is a specific push to get more young people to vote, as the turnout is traditionally low, with just 43pc casting their vote in the 2015 general election.

Only British Citizens aged 18 and over can vote in this election.

On Thursday 8th June voters on the Isle of Wight will go to the polls to elect their Member of Parliament in the general election.

"This is a big responsibility and we don't people to be turned away because they didn't check that they were registered to vote".

You can register online at Gov.uk/register-to-vote which will take you through the necessary steps to register, which only takes a couple of minutes.

To vote in the snap election on 8 June, you need to register by 11:59pm on 22 May.

To be able to register, residents must have their National Insurance number to hand.

If you're already registered to vote and haven't moved since the last election, you don't need to do anything but head to the polling station on voting day.

You will need your passport if you're a British citizen living overseas.

You can also use the online form to update your name, address or other details on the electoral register, change your voting preferences or change whether you are on the open register.

You can not vote if you have been legally excluded from doing so.
