Cyber virus hits China, Europe warns of more attacks

Security experts have warned that another attack is imminent, most likely on Monday, and could be unstoppable.

To recap, on Friday many NHS hospitals across the United Kingdom were forced to shut down IT systems and telephones lines, and in some cases cancel operations and send patients home, after being struck by the ransomware attack, later identified to be a variant of Wanna Decryptor/WannaCry/WCry.

The Leatside Surgery was hit in on Friday afternoon after NHS computer systems across the country were hit by a ransomware attack.

Leaders around the globe responded to Friday's attacks, which hit at least 150 countries.

The NHS has provided an update about planned treatment and outpatient appointments following the ransomware attack on its IT systems.

Hutchins, who uses the name MalwareTech online, is now helping the National Cyber Security Centre with their investigations.

Security minister Ben Wallace said that the NHS had followed "pretty good procedures" in dealing with the attack.

Rob Whiteman, CIPFA chief executive said: "The NHS ransomware attack needs to be a stark reminder for all government organisations to ensure IT security is optimal, regularly reviewed and upgraded, and given the resources to match our reliance on digital systems". Shortly after that disclosure, Microsoft announced that it had already issued software "patches, " or fixes, for those holes _ but many users haven't yet installed the fixes or are using older versions of Windows.

"It is important to note that the vast majority of NHS organizations report that they are running contemporary IT systems, which are commissioned depending on local need", the NHS said in a statement.

A total 12 out of 14 health boards in Scotland experienced only minor disruptions following Friday's global ransomware attack, with two escaping the attack completely.

Twitter users around the world posted complaints about their computers shutting down and posted photos of the ransom demands on their computer screens.

Experts believe one main reason why healthcare organisations are particularly at risk from cyber attacks may be due to lack of awareness about email authentication in the sector.

"As a result of the attack, we will be reviewing and further strengthening our system protection arrangements", the spokesperson said. "Attackers update their software ... other attackers will learn from the method and will carry out attacks".
