Chaffetz wants Comey to testify next week

We now know that the FBI Director made contemptuous notes of his meetings with the president, that dinner in January, when the president reportedly asked him if he was under investigation, requested a pledge of personal loyalty, an Oval Office meeting in February, when the president-after asking his vice president and attorney general to leave the room-brought up the FBI investigation of his fired National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee Jason Chaffetz has stated he wants the Federal Bureau of Investigation to hand over all "memoranda, notes, summaries and recordings" of discussions between Trump and Comey. But he has set a hearing for May 24. After Tuesday's revelation, the White House said in a statement, "While the President has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn".

Firing FBI Director James Comey is already coming back to haunt President Donald Trump. Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe told Congress last week the investigation is "highly significant" and said Comey's dismissal would do nothing to impede the probe.

John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said late Tuesday that the developments had reached "Watergate size and scale". Trump later admitted in a television interview about Comey's firing that he was bothered by "this Russian Federation thing" and said he would have fired Comey regardless of the Justice Department recommendation.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), an iconoclastic libertarian, told reporters that if reports about Comey's memo are true he thinks Trump should be impeached.

The New York Times was the first on Tuesday to report the discussion and subsequent memo. Flynn, a retired Army general, was dismissed from his job less than a month into the new administration after misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with the Russian ambassador regarding USA sanctions against Russia.

Asked what Mr Trump should do at this point, Mr McCain, who has long had a hard and complicated relationship with Mr Trump, referred once again to the Nixon presidency and said, "get it all out" before the public, "no matter what it is".

Meanwhile, all 33 Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee asked their Republican chairmen for a full investigation into the president and his top White House aides. "Memos, transcripts, tapes - the list keeps getting longer", he said.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump said to Comey, according to the source who read the memo. Comey said he replied that "I agree he is a good guy" but said nothing to Trump about limiting the investigation. The associate also confirmed an account from the Times that Trump vented about media leaks during his conversation with Comey, and that the president expressed support for seeing reporters in prison.

A USA official who confirmed the disclosure to The Associated Press said the revelation potentially put the source at risk.
