All future elections on VVPAT-enabled EVMs, Hackathon on used machines: EC

All future elections on VVPAT-enabled EVMs, Hackathon on used machines: EC

The party will approach the Commission tomorrow seeking access to electronic voting machines (EVMs) that were used in the recently held Assembly polls.

The Aam Aadmi Party's live demonstration in the Delhi assembly two days ago on how an EVM can be tampered with to favour a particular party made national headlines.

The meeting was called after 13 political parties met EC raising questions on EVMs.

"Although use of VVPAT (voter verifiable paper audit trail system) with EVMs will ensure total credibility and transparency and put to rest all controversy, the Commission will, after today's meeting, hold a challenge", he added.

The Election Commission, through media, has learnt about a so called demonstration of tampering of "look-alike" EVM.

He said the AAP is ready to demonstrate before the panel about how the EVMs could have tampered. Now the VVPAT will also be used in 2019 general elections.

One of the protesters said, "We want the ECI to wake up and amend the machine". Such so called demonstration on extraneous and duplicate gadgets which are not owned by the ECI can not be exploited to influence our Intelligent Citizens & Electorate to assail or vilify the EVMs used by the Commission in its electoral process.

RJD spokesperson Manoj Jha said by harping on the infallibility of EVMs, the EC was acting as the custodian of just the "instruments" and not the process as a whole.

The date for the suggested "hackathon", where politics parties will be given a free hand to try to tamper with EVMs keep in EC strong rooms.

Zaidi also said the Commission has "no favourites" and it was equidistant from all parties.

Election commission had brusquely rejected AAP's allegations of faulty EVMS.

Meanwhile, Election Commission of India (ECI) sources said that the AAP had demonstrated the alleged rigging on a prototype EVM and challenged AAP to prove it during an official EC hackathon challenge. "The EC can give us its machines, we will show how to hack it in 90 seconds by merely changing its motherboard", Kejriwal told reporters outside the assembly.

During the special day-long session of the Delhi Assembly, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj got a machine similar to the EVMs and gave a demo about the same.

Leaders of other parties like the CPI, RJD and RLD raised related as well as other aspects of the electoral process like corporate funding.

Tankha, Chairman of the Legal and Human Rights Department of the Congress, said going back to the paper ballot could also be a solution.

Sacked Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra shows copies of his complaint alleging irregularities in the AAP prior to approaching the CBI. "Paper trail machines should be installed".
