Windows 10 will throttle background apps to save your laptop battery
The company has basically been doing this for a while and we knew that after the Creators Update (Redstone 2) was released in late March that we'd start to see evidence of "Redstone 3" (no marketing name for that one yet) in September. This means that if you want your Windows 10 or Office ProPlus installation supported long-term, you'll have to update it from time to time.
However, Microsoft has been claiming the figure of 400 million Windows 10 devices for some seven months now - when it is just weeks away from its avowed aim of getting Windows 10 onto two billion devices by June 2017. "With "Power Throttling", when background work is running, Windows places the CPU in its most energy efficient operating modes - work gets done, but the minimal possible battery is spent on that work", the company explains on its blog.
Microsoft has announced it will stick with twice-a-year feature update schedule for Windows 10. The Mobile build is neither fish nor fowl: It's not a test build for Windows 10 Creators Update and it's not a test build for Redstone 3.
September and March have been designated for the feature update schedule moving forward, which means the next major feature update, which we now know as Redstone 3 and which already has Insider preview builds being pushed out, will come in September 2017.
There will be fewer releases for the basic enterprise version of the Office and Office 365 ProPlus because Windows 10, Office 365 ProPlus and Microsoft's System Center Configuration Manager are now aligned on the same schedule. It is not clear what Microsoft plans to introduce with the new update, which will roll out in September. Confronting the problems that many have to face when it comes to unknown Windows 10 upgrade schedules, Microsoft is now setting a clear path that the company intends to follow.
The firm says each of these releases will be supported for 18 months after its release.
As you can see, the Windows team had a solid 8 months plus for each of the last two feature update development cycles. Office 365 ProPlus will have its major updates at the same time. That means any Kaby Lake or Bristol Ridge Ryzen users can install the security updates for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 after using this unofficial patch.
The updates will not impact the web versions of Office apps like Word Online, PowerPoint Online, and more.
