Final killer whale to be born in SeaWorld park welcomed

Researchers are now able to study how a baby orca reacts around siblings because two of Takara's other calves are also housed at the San Antonio theme park.

SeaWorld is excited to announce the birth of the newest member of the SeaWorld family of killer whales.

The last killer whale has been born in captivity at a SeaWorld park.

More than a year after SeaWorld said it would stop breeding orcas in captivity, the theme park chain announced the birth of its final killer whale calf.

The company said it welcomed its newest aqua-animal when Takara, the 25-year-old matriarch of the SeaWorld San Antonio killer whale pod, gave birth to the calf Wednesday afternoon.

Tell us, HollywoodLifers - are you happy this is the last baby orca born in captivity at SeaWorld?

"Although this will be the last opportunity for SeaWorld guests to see a baby killer whale up close as it grows and matures, SeaWorld will continue to care for the orcas at its parks for decades to come", the company said. SeaWorld didn't immediately name the calf because the park's veterinarians have not yet determined whether it is male or female.

SeaWorld's chief zoological officer Chris Dold said the park has no current plans to relocate any orcas.

The film focused on Tilikum, who killed his trainer Dawn Branchaeu in Orlando in 2010 during a "Dine with Shamu" show. It brings SeaWorld's orca population in the U.S.to 23. "Our expectation is that all of this will go smoothly, but we take none of that for granted". The moment the calf is born, Takara is 100% focused on the care and well-being of that baby. Everyday she inspires SeaWorld's guests to learn more about and do more to protect animals in the wild. Researchers say they will use the birth of the baby to study orca development in ways that can't be done in the wild.

"This will be one of the first times we'll be able to see not just a mother with a newborn calf but also a newborn calf with siblings", Hill said. One of her calves has been loaned out to a park in Spain, and another one lives at the company's Florida theme park, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
