Facebook CEO Announces New AR Studio Development Platform
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during the two-day annual F8 developer conference launched a platform for developers to encourage augmented reality (AR) camera effects. However, AR is just as viable a technology, yet should cost a lot less to develop and doesn't require any expensive purchases for consumers. "We're making the camera the first AR platform".
"The unique thing that we're going to do is we're not just going to build basic cameras, we're going to build the first mainstream augmented reality platform".
Mike Schroepfer, Facebook's chief technology officer, gave another example: "Let's say I took a wonderful vacation photo and a windsurfer rudely interrupted my view".
Analyst Jan Dawson, of Jackdaw Research, said Facebook's new tools and features were impressive but added that "most of them won't be in users' hands anytime soon". The new AR Studio is bound to bring forth some exciting new applications and it will be very interesting to see what creative devs can come up with. These tools will include precise location mapping, creation of 3D objects from 2D images, and object recognition. His avatar was able to travel, play games, and interact with other avatars in virtual reality.
Per CNET, Franklin also mentioned that the VR platform will also eventually be open to software developers so they can build on what the social network has started.
Another new development by Facebook is the development of the beta version of the Social VR product known as Spaces.
Until the past year or so, it seemed like it would be at least another decade before augmented reality would have a chance to become a widely used technology, said Ficus Kirkpatrick, Facebook's director of engineering.
It also launched a virtual world, called Facebook Spaces, created to let users of its Oculus Rift VR headset hang out with avatar versions of their friends in a virtual world.
With Developer Circles, Facebook is targeting developer communities to connect and collaborate.
However, Facebook's entry into AR will be much bigger than that of "Pokemon GO".
In this app, everyone is treated as a comic characters or avatars and users can also customize those avatars based on their interest.
