50 years later: South Bend runner finishes Boston Marathon, honors first woman

Along with Granville, a wounded Marine, Staff Sergeant Jose Luis Sanchez, also finished the Boston Marathon on Monday with a prosthetic leg while carrying an American flag.

Marathons produce inspiring stories and the Boston Marathon was no different.

During Monday's race, Hasay wore her late mother's engagement ring, whom she spoke about during the post-race press conference. He ran his first Marathon in Washington D.C.in 2015 and finished Boston previous year as well.

Videos of both heroes were shared widely on social media, earning well-deserved praise all the way.

" 'You'll never have children, ' they said".

The sole woman on the course that day, Katherine Switzer, was the first woman to break the gender barrier at the Boston Marathon. So she took charge, and entered under the genderless name K V Switzer.

But while Gibb seemed to pass unnoticed during the run, race director Jock Semple was infuriated and went after Switzer midrace.

"It's not for me, it's for others to be inspired, to be motivated", he said after he completed the race. I said to my coach immediately after the incident: 'I have to finish this race now because if I drop out of this race, nobody's going to believe that women are serious'.

Shockingly, it would be another five years before women were officially allowed to compete in the Boston Marathon. Bobbi Gibb hid in the bushes by the starting line and snuck into the mass of runners as they passed, finishing in 3:21:40.

"How many times do you get the chance to do something 50 years later?" Switzer asked. "As negative as that experience was, it became the best thing in my life".
