The police shifted the injured to the government hospital in Chittoor and the deceased were sent for post-mortem.
More than 20 peoples were killed and several others were injured when a lorry crashed into Yerpedu market area near Tirupati in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.
The truck was going from Srikalahasti to Tirupati.
Police said the truck with heavy load which was travelling at a high speed, lost control and hit an electric pole before crushing several people under its wheels. The lorry, coming from Srikalahasti towards Tirupati, lost control and hit the electric pole first.
The Deccan Chronicle reported that some of the victims were also staging a protest before the police station, demanding action against illegal sand transportation from their native villages, when the accident occurred. The death toll is likely to rise. The police believe 10 people died on the spot while two died on the way to a hospital. Additional Superintendent of Police confirmed that 24 people were also injured in the accident that took place just 30 km from the temple town of Tirupati.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu took stock of the situation and instructed ministers and other public representatives to go to the site of the accident immediately and provide the victims with all the necessary assistance.
