Yoruba, Hausa traders clash in Ile-Ife not about ethnicity - FG

Dambazau stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents in Abuja on Sunday.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Monday paraded twenty suspects over the recent ethnic crisis in Sabo Ile-Ife of Osun State.

"The Hausa community has been living in Ife for close to 200 years".

"I understand the first settlers arrived there in 1820; these are about fourth, fifth generation of the community and they have never experienced this kind of thing until now".

"So, it is not about ethnic issue".

Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazzau declared this Friday after visiting the scene of the incident and meeting with leaderships of the two communities involved in the clash.

"So we made them understand that they should not look at it from the point of ethnicity and they all agreed".

The minister while speaking with journalists at the weekend‎ condemned the extent of damage and said that government had the situation under control.

"We made them understand that the government is up and doing, the government is taking up its responsibility in ensuring that it protects lives and properties because in accordance with chapter two of the constitution, the objective of government is protection of lives and properties".

"So, we emphasized that there is the need for us to be in peace because without peace, it is impossible to develop and that was understood by everybody".

He said consequent on the clashes, disturbance of public peace and mayhem that occurred in Ile-Ife, Osun State on the 8th of March, 2017 which resulted in the loss of innocent lives and destruction of properties worth Millions of Naira.

The Force spokesman added: " The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, deployed Police Special Intervention Force, comprising five units of the Police Mobile Force, five Cells of Counter Terrorism Unit, Conventional Policemen, Special Anti -Robbery Squad, Intelligence Response Team, Technical Intelligence Unit, SIB, detachment of EOD and Police K9 (Sniffer Dogs Section), with their Headquarters in Ile-Ife, led by the Commissioner of Police in charge of PMF, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He said the crisis started on March 7 when a Yoruba and Hausa groups started throwing stones at each other, following an alleged altercation between Kuburat Eluwole and Abubakar Mohammed.

Media reports indicated that relief materials were now being supplied to the affected communities by government agencies and well-meaning individuals and organisations.
