This Airline Just Banned All Electronic Devices on Board

In its tweet, Royal Jordanian referenced "instructions from the concerned US departments" but did not offer further details.

The prohibition is scheduled to begin Tuesday and involves Royal Jordanian flights to New York, Chicago and Detroit, according to an airline tweet.

In a statement, Royal Jordanian said it would ban all laptops, tablets, cameras, DVD players and electronic games from being taken into the passenger cabin.

Based at Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Royal Jordanian operates more than 500 flights a week across the globe.

The Verge reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration for clarification, but was referred to the Department of Homeland Security.

The Transportation Security Administration, which ensures that security meets USA standards at airports that send flights to the USA, and the Department of Homeland Security each said: "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate". Asked if Royal Jordanian is acting at the behest of DHS, the spokesperson said, "I'm not able to say anything more at this time". Royal Jordanian's flights to Montreal, which now continues on to Detroit, would also be affected. Many commented that the airline would lose customers over this policy.

A tweet from the airline's official account listed new rules for all passengers flying in and out of the US that spell horror for anyone who gets bored on long distance journeys. Official. Few additional details.

All personal electronics, apart from cellphones, have been banned on flights to the U.S. from 13 countries.

Last year, the Department of Transportation banned the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone because a number of devices caught fire, several on planes. This could be the first electronics ban, though, targeting specific carriers based on nationality. That executive order has also been blocked.
