Iditarod XLV wraps up with awards banquet in Nome

Associate General Counsel Daniel Cheyenne presented him with a certificate for the award at the checkpoint, and it will be re-presented to Seavey during the Iditarod Awards Banquet in Nome.

Sebastien Vergnaud won Rookie of the Year receiving $2,000 as the top placing rookie in 23rd place.

Over the 1,000-mile course, Seavy and his team of 11 dogs averaged 10-11 miles per hour, running through temperatures that dipped as low as negative 50 degrees.

He began the Iditarod with 16 dogs and reached the finish line with a gritty group of nine frosty canines. Other deaths this year include an injured dog who's suspected to have died from hyperthermia, a dog who was hit by a vehicle after he had escaped from his handler, and two dogs who collapsed on the trail and died from "acute aspiration pneumonia", which may have been caused by inhaling their own vomit.

Royer, who has also lived in White Sulphur Springs and Philipsburg and spends about two-thirds of the year living north of Fairbanks, Alaska, started racing at age 11.

Mitch Seavey, of Seward, Alaska, turned in a record-breaking time of 8 days, 3 hours, 40 minutes and 13 seconds, beating the old best time set by his own son, Dallas Seavey, last year, by five hours.

The Sportsmanship Award was given to Allen Moore as chosen by the mushers.

Musher Ryan Redington - a native of Alaska who now is based out of Northwestern Wisconsin - finished in 14th place Wednesday.
