Gordon Brown Promotes Federal UK As 'Patriotic' Alternative to Breaking Up Britain

British Prime Minister Theresa May told the Scottish government on Thursday "now is not the time" for a second independence referendum, saying it would be unfair to ask people to vote without knowing the result of Brexit talks.

The UK is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Sturgeon said she understood not all Scots share her party members' enthusiasm for a new poll.

The point is that, in the course of the first referendum on Scottish independence, though 55 percent voted no, as opposed to the 45 percent who voted yes, a national consciousness was raised that is not going to sleep any time soon.

The theme of "democratic deficit" that brought Sturgeon, 46, to the SNP has been compounded by Brexit, she says.

"Nobody is proposing that there should be a referendum held right now".

Speaking separately in Scotland, former prime minister Gordon Brown - who still has sway with many Scots who want to keep ties to the United Kingdom - said Brexit had torn up the status quo and there was a need for new powers for the Scottish parliament.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme last week, she said that access to the EU's single market would be a key part of any Scottish deal. "But if she (May) is talking in the spring of 2019, a bit later perhaps than I was suggesting then there may be some room for discussion around that", she said. But the majority of Scots voted in favor of Britain staying in the European Union in June with 62 percent voting remain and 38 percent voting leave. They are not even waiting to see what kind of Brexit deal the Government can achieve.

Concluding the speech, Sturgeon quoted Canon Kenyon Wright, the chair of the Constitutional Convention that led to the re-establishment of the Scottish Parliament.

"What would be unfair is to deny people in Scotland their choice".

At the same time Scotland would also find itself outside North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the main Western alliance.

She said the SNP had felt obliged to act because of a lack of "choice and clarity" from May and Downing Street over what may happen after Brexit.

Why wouldn't they? They have the highest per capita debt in Europe (higher than Greece), the oil price has tanked and it was on that which all the economic predictions of self governing economic viability was based, they may well face a "hard border" with England, would not be permitted to use OUR currency the Pound Sterling and their application to join the European Union (which in any case would take years) would be
vetoed by the Spanish or

Ms Sturgeon wants the vote to take place at some point between autumn 2018 and spring 2019, when Brexit negotiations will be entering their final, fraught phase. If May doesn't relent it "will be the proof that the Tories have returned to the bad old days of Thatcher's Britain running roughshod over Scotland", he told the SNP conference in Aberdeen. The timing of Sturgeon's referendum is, however, cynical and rushed - and mostly unwanted.

Firstly, the prospect of being forced to adopt the euro as its currency, given the Eurozone crisis of recent years, is not one the more clear-eyed supporters of independence will relish.

Brexit is more important to voters than keeping the United Kingdom together, a poll has found.

"The status quo has been overtaken by events because unless powers now with the European Union are repatriated from Brussels to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly and the regions, Whitehall will have perpetrated one of the biggest power grabs by further centralising power, employment and energy".
