Facebook may showcase its hardware products in April

Business Insider reports that while it is unclear what exactly the products will be, sources have revealed that there are now four simultaneous projects underway with technology ranging from cameras and augmented reality to easy-to-access brain scanning technology. In December, the secretive Building 8 reportedly entered into an agreement with 17 universities to boost research and development. Former Darpa director and Google employee Regina Dugan was roped in to head the team a year ago.

There are also whispers surrounding a brain-scanning technology, while new staff hires seem to suggest Facebook is once again looking at drones, perhaps beyond the bounds of its Aquila internet-providing UAV. The project is now headed by neuroscientist John Hopkins, who has helped to develop a mind-controlled prosthetic arm, reports Business Insider.

The report adds that Facebook has hired a former John Hopkins neuroscientist to develop a mind-controlled prosthetic arm along with an interventional cardiologist from Stanford with experience in medical device development. Facebook is also looking to embark on a fifth project, the details of which are not known, and the company is said to be looking for someone who can lead it, according to BI.

"Building 8 will include a big retail push complete with warehouse operations, different retail experiences, and a "global contact centre footprint", the report said. It owns the Oculus virtual reality platform and has dabbled in phones too, but has always partnered with or purchased a hardware company to get its name alongside physical consumer tech.
