Company recalls edamame due to listeria concerns

An Edamame product that is sold at Publix has been recalled in 33 states, including Florida, due to fears it may be contaminated with potentially fatal listeria bacteria.

To make sure its customers noticed, Publix announced the recall Friday on its website.

Advanced Fresh Concepts Franchise Corp., or AFC, recalled their edamame labeled as "Edamame - Soybeans in Pods" and carrying "sell by" dates between January 3 and March 17 of 2017 because Listeria was found during random testing. Those symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

The affected products have a UPC code of 0-23012-00261-9 and are dated between 01/03/2017 and 03/17/2017. Pregnant women may only have mild flu-like symptoms, but this illness can cause stillbirth, miscarriage, premature labor, and fetal infection.

Listeria infections can be fatal for young children, the elderly, pregnant women or those with weakened immune systems.

The company has notified all retail locations of the recall, so the product should no longer be available for purchase.

The edamame was sold at retail sushi counters within grocery stores, cafeterias, and corporate dining centers in 33 states including MI.
