Boris to calm Trump spy row

Boris to calm Trump spy row

Earlier on Sunday, California Republican Representative Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, also pushed back against the claims, asserting that "there was no FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) warrant" for wiretapping.

Britain's communications intelligence agency GCHQ has issued a statement denying it wiretapped Donald Trump during the USA presidential campaign.

Sir Peter Westmacott, who was the UK's top diplomat in the U.S. until January, also urged the White House to pubicly accept British assurances that the allegation about GCHQ is nonsense.

'The intelligence relationship between Britain and America is unique and precious.

Russian Federation may have been behind the claim that GCHQ spied on Donald Trump, a former British ambassador to Washington suggested today.

He warned it risked undermining a relationship that was "critical" to US-UK efforts to counter a range of threats including terrorism, Russian aggression, Chinese cyber-attacks, and the nuclear threat from North Korea.

"Anyone with any knowledge of the intelligence world knew the suggestion was absurd".

Now, The Times is reporting that British foreign secretary Boris Johnson is visiting the United States this coming week to "patch up ties" with the White House, along with other planned meetings.

Westmacott also referred to Trump's "famous reluctance to admit mistakes". On March 4, the president claimed in a tweet that Obama had tapped his phones during the presidential election. "I have seen nothing on the NSA side that we engaged in any such activity nor that anyone ever asked us to engage in such activity", Rogers told the committee.

The claims of GCHQ involvement were initially made by former judge Andrew Napolitano.

GCHQ made an extremely rare public denial, calling the claims "utterly ridiculous", and saying they "should be ignored".

Downing Street said it had secured an assurance that the allegation would not be repeated.

REUTERS/Jonathan ErnstHe refused to apologise when asked by a reporter, saying: "All we did was quote a certain very talented legal mind who was the one responsible for saying that on television. I didn't make an opinion on it", Trump said.

Fox News has disassociated itself from the allegations, saying there is no evidence to back them.

An allegation had also been made in a report on Russian TV channel RT that GCHQ passed intelligence on Mr Trump's campaign to United States intelligence bosses.
