Co-editor of the billionaires list, Kerry Dolan, revealed that gains are mostly the result of rising price of oil over the past 12 months and the booming stock market. But Mr Bezos' $27.6bn increase on last year's figure marked the largest increase of anyone on the list. Joining Gates in the top three is investor/philanthropist Warren Buffet, with a net worth of $75.6 billion and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, the biggest gainer on the list, with a net worth of $72.8 billion.

Amancio Ortega, the Spanish business tycoon best known for owning the Zara fashion label, came in fourth, making him the highest ranking non-American with an estimated fortunate of $71.3bn.

Whilst the US President has refused to publish any of his tax returns to show the true scale of his wealth, during his Presidential campaign he claimed he was worth "an excess of $10 billion".

According to Forbes, the change in the total number of billionaires - up 233 since last year - was the biggest increase in 31 years.

Billionaire's across the globe saw their net worth jump by 18% to $7.7trn (£6.2trn) over the previous year, according to Forbes 2017 billionaires list. 238 inherited their wealth; another 434 inherited at least a portion but are still growing it. For the second year running, France's Liliane Bettencourt is the world's wealthiest woman with a $39.5 billion net worth. "In October 2016, at the time of the release of the 2016 Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans, Forbes valued Trump's net worth at $3.7 billion", Forbes said.

Southeast Asia was home to the most billionaires at 720, Forbes said.
